In
New York, Japanese restaurants seem to be introducing tip-ban services
following the Japanese custom. Japan doesn't have the custom of tipping which
the US and European countries have. When
you order a home delivery pizza in Japan, you don't need to pay the extra
charges to the delivery person. He/she doesn't expect to receive a tip from
customers and will hesitate to receive it, because they know that the price is
calculated under every cost including the service fee. However, in some cases,
we pay tips, such as when we received excellent services more than we expected.
When we stay at a hotel and the staffs are very kind and thoughtful, we'll tip
them for their hospitality, but it is not common that we pay tips at a
restaurant. Instead of tips, some restaurants would add on extra charges as the
service fee.
In
the US, the staff's salary is set lower because the owners expect that the
staff can get extra money as tips. It is believed that customers will pay
higher tips when the staff provide good services. However, according to studies
of Cornell University, good services are not related to the amount of tips and
the customers seem to pay the same amount of tips regardless of the quality of
services. The researcher says that the relationship between the quality of services and the amount of tips is
considerably low. The no-tip system seems to be good for customers and
restaurants because customers don't worry about the tip while having the meals
and also restaurants can offer the good meals without thinking about the
customer's concerns. On the other hand, some people do not agree with the ban on
tipping. The quality of services will be declining to a lower level as the
staff won't work harder if the tip system is banned.
Tip-ban
services might be good news for Japanese people because the tip-custom is not
familiar to us. Apart from the arguments of good or bad, there are no customs
of tipping in Japan. When you stay in Japan, you don't need to put a tip on the
table. If you put it following the custom in your countries, it might be that
the waiter/waitress needs to run after you and pay the tip back outside the
restaurant.
